History

  • The mountain is named after Marmaduke Dixon, a mountaineer who was active in New Zealand in the early 20th century.
  • The first ascent of Mount Dixon was made in 1936 by F. Gillett, T. Newth, A. Thompson, A. P. Thompson, and M. E. Roberts.

Routes

  • East Ridge (2+): the standard route on Mount Dixon from Plateau Hut, gains the East Ridge up steep snow, ice and rock gullies (the technical crux), then ascends the long and exposed East Ridge to the summit. The best descent route. See on Fatmap
  • South Ridge (3-4): technically more challenging route, involving steep snow, ice and rock climbing. See on Fatmap

Planning

The peak climbing season for Mount Dixon ascents is November to March, but it is sometimes possible to climb the mountain outside of these dates, depending on conditions.
